Encephalitis Society (ES)
ES was established in 1994, in response to the overwhelming lack of information on encephalitis for people affected by the condition and their need for mutual support in coming to terms with its consequences. The operating name of the organisation was changed to the Encephalitis Society - action for support, awareness and research in May 2003 to reflect the wider breadth of the work undertaken. Sophie Cameron Trust
In 1999, Sophie Cameron, who was a seventeen-year-old schoolgirl, was diagnosed with Encephalitis Lethargica(EL). She spent nine months in hospital, three of them in intensive care, and although she survived the illness, she was left severely disabled. The Sophie Cameron Trust was established in 2001 by the many friends of the Cameron family, in order to do something positive to help Sophie. The Cameron family generously agreed to allow Sophie's name to be used by the Trust. The Trust committee soon realised, however, that the "bigger picture" needed to be addressed. Not only Sophie, but also others with EL might need assistance, and would be in a position to benefit from developments and opportunities arising from progress in medical and scientific research.
